At the winter solstice on December 21, the Kapha season starts. Would you like to minimize its influence on body and mind? Then this blog is for you.
Don’t get caught by cold and humidity
The Kapha season lasts until the end of spring and is – just like the Kapha dosha – characterized by cold, humidity, slowness and a more heavy energy in general than the other seasons. If you have a Kapha constitution or imbalance (with comparatively more earth and water), you will generally feel a greater effect of this period on your body and mind than if your constitution has, for example, more Pitta (fire). During this time, the body will become more heavy as if by itself and you may also be affected by colds and mucous. Also people with a Vata constitution experience the effect of this period, since the cold that is typical for this constition is intensified.
Follow a Kapha balancing lifestyle
Here are e few tips to stay balanced.
- Have local and preferably organic seasonal fruits and vegetables. They nurture your body and mind the best.
- For a Kapha constitution: have Kapha balancing food, less sweet, sour and salty products (or avoid even) and avoid heavy meals. Bread, crackers, cornflakes and popcorn are also considered to be cold. Spicy, astringent and bitter tastes keep Kapha balanced.
- For a Vata constitution: have Vata balancing food, avoid spicy, bitter and astringent tastes and avoid cold meals. Drink sufficient warm water and have good fats like ghee and organic olive oil to avoid dehydration. Somewhat heavier meals such as stews will be beneficial.
- Have the largest meal around noon when your digestive fire is at its strongest.
- Use warming spices in your meals: stewed apple or cooked oats with cinnamon, warm meals with brown mustard seeds and cumin, ginger tea, honey.
- Massage your body every morning with warm sesame oil. This warms up the body, hydrates the skin and prevents cold and wind to enter the body. A daily self massage (abhyanga) is also stress reducing.
- Have enough daily exercise: a 30 minute brisk walk refreshes the mind and stimulates the body.
- Wear clothes in warm colors such as red and orange to brighten the grey days.
- Wear a hat or a cap when you go outside; you lose a great deal of body heat through your head.
