About Panchakarma

Panchakarma is one of the most extensive cleansing methods for body and mind. Before the actual cleansing, the body needs to be prepared through specific methods that stimulate the disposal of toxins. These methods are called Snehana and Swedana.

Snehana is a body massage with warm herbal oil that helps the body to dispose itself of toxins. It also makes the tissues soft and smooth, removes stress and nourishes the nervous system.

Swedana stimulates the body to perspire through the use of steam and special herbs. The steam causes the pores to widen, allowing the toxins to leave the body. Note: this is not a sauna or steam bath.

The 5 main basic types of cleansing of Pachakarma

Vamana: therapeutic vomiting

Vamana is therapeutic vomiting, which is a medicated emesis therapy. This treatment is given to people with a high imbalance of Kapha. The treatment loosens and mobilizes the toxins, thus making it easier to eliminate them from the body.

Virechana: purgation

Virechana is medicated purgation therapy: it is the cleansing of the Pitta and the purification of the blood toxins. It completely cleanses the gastro-intestinal tract and is a safe procedure without side effects. Virechana helps to root out skin diseases, gout, gastro-intestinal problems, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diabetes and gynaecological disorders.

Nasya: nasal administration

The nose is the gateway to the brain and also to the consciousness. Applying medicine through the nostrils is called Nasya. Bodily fluids that have accumulated in the sinus, throat, nose or head are thus being removed through the nose.

Basti: enema therapy

Basti is the procedure by which the medicines are administered to the lower gastro-intestinal tract with an instrument “vasthiyanthra”, according to Ayurveda principles. Basti is the most effective treatment of Vata-related problems, such as constipation, cold, sexual disorders, kidney stones, back pain, sciatica and joint pains. Many other Vata-related complaints such as arthritis, rheumatism, muscle cramps and headache can also be relieved through Basti.

Raktamoksha: blood letting

In Raktamoksha, vitiated blood is removed from the body.
