Vitamin D ensures the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the food. Calcium and phosphate are necessary for the proper construction of bones and teeth. In addition, D3 supports the immune system, contributes to the proper functioning of the nervous system, is good for the functioning of the muscles, and ensures the maintenance of a normal structure and function of the skin.*
Vitamin D3 most effective
The most common forms of vitamin D (calciferol) are vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Vitamin D2, ergocalciferol, is naturally present in vegetable foods and fungi (eg mushrooms, yeast and cheese). Vitamin D3, cholecalciferol, is found in foods of animal origin such as fatty fish, cod liver oil, sheep's wool fat and eggs. This is the same form that is produced in the skin after exposure to ultraviolet rays such as the sun (hence the nickname "sunshine vitamin"). The skin cannot produce vitamin D if it has been applied with a sunscreen of factor 15 or higher. Covering the skin too much with clothing and wearing sunglasses also significantly inhibit vitamin D production.
To exert their activity, both forms of vitamin D (D2 and D3) must be converted into the active form: 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol). However, in terms of supplementation, it is important to note that in most cases vitamin D3 appears to be more effective than vitamin D2 in increasing blood calcidiol and ultimately calcitriol.
Did you know that the Health Council recommends seniors and people with a dark skin color to take extra vitamin D (via a supplement)?
Covid-19 patients who are in intensive care with severe symptoms appear to have a reduced vitamin D level remarkably often. A causal relationship is by no means certain, but leading professor Adrian Martineau, clinical professor of respiratory tract infection and immunity at Queen Mary University in London, calls on the observation to be taken seriously and further research to be carried out.
